Writing Ideas,Applesauce Recipe, and extras!

Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year! Reading will look a little different this year.  We will be NOT be switching, but trying something new called the Daily 5.  I am very positive that it will be a successful program!  We are continuing to work on Writer's Workshop throughout the year.  This year is going to be great!  If you ever have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me. Writing Ideas

We know how difficult it is to get the kids excited about writing. It is one of the hardest skills to develop.

Next year, on the Smarter Balance Test, your child will need to be able to write good stories, edit and revise writing samples, and give written explanations for their answers on the math section. This is an area that we are focusing heavily on so that we may see higher scores and help the children become successful test takers as well as competent writers.

Here are some ideas that may help motivate your child to practice writing at home:

  • buy them fancy diaries or journals
  • get them cute stationary and have them write letters to friends and relatives
  • have them create sticker stories. (They make a picture using stickers and crayons, then write about the scene they came up with.)
  • let them use the computer to write a story, practice typing, or send an email
  • have them write a retelling of a favorite movie or cartoon they have just seen
  • let them create a story based on their favorite video game
  • after a family outing or event have them write a retelling of what they did
  • put ideas for stories on strips of paper in a jar. Let them pull an idea out of the jar and write about it.

Here's to a fantastic year!!

Applesauce recipe

Our applesauce making activity ws a huge hit! Many of the kids asked about the recipe so they could make it at home. SO here it is...

-8 large cooking apples, peeled, cored, and sliced or cut into chunks

-1/2 c. water

-2 tsp. cinnamon

-1/2 c. sugar

1. Combine all ingredients in a slow cooker.

2. Cover. Cook on low 8 hrs. or high for 3-4 hrs.

3. Serve warm or chilled.

*This won't make too much. In class we doubled the recipe. Enjoy and happy eating!
